ATLANTICA: "Our new album will give faith in better future"

02 april 2009 Press-release

Hardly had FM stations started playing songs by ATLANTICA, the project became a true sensation among music lovers in Belarus. Throughout 5 years of its existence, ATLANTICA has been arousing huge interest and polar opinions on itself. One thing is absolutely clear though: ATLANTICA is still atop the waves of Belarusian music. “Taboo” proves the status. As Alex David and Pavel Baranovsky, creators and co-authors of ATLANTICA, have stated: “In “Taboo” we have set the bar, many musicians would be willing to reach for. “

ATLANTICA have been working on the album over a year. For the sake of implementation of new music ideas, ATLANTICA have changed the team of sound specialists. While working on “Taboo”, ATLANTICA started cooperation with Oleg Ivanovich, a guitarist, arranger and sound-producer, and Edward Ivanov, a highly qualified specialist in mixing and postproduction. Over 30 songs were composed by Alex David and Pavel Baranovsky, but eventually only 11 of them have become “Taboo”.

Preproduction period took quite a while.

Oleg Ivanovich (the arranger): “On the one hand we wanted to achieve something brand new, but on the other hand, we wanted the album to be recognizable and associated with ATLANTICA. So, we chose to actively use unusual guitar riffs and instruments, we had never used before. Strong emphasis was made on wind section and ethnic instruments.

Despite the fact that much of the material had been recorded, the album had no title for quite a while.

Alex David (ATLANTICA front man): “We were constantly listening to the recorded material, trying to find something that could unite songs into one concept. We were to some extent frightened by the diversity of genres and styles, represented in the album. But at a certain point we understood that ATLANTICA had made several brave steps and extended the borders of the sound, we had been accustomed to. Through breaking our own stylistic taboos we became different. The title song, “Taboo” was written last. We understood that this song was in itself an idea we wanted to manifest in the album: we can be different, we are not afraid of being open, we are not afraid of living. Thus we came up with the title for the album.

The album turned out to be completely different from our previous works, though we are trying to challenge neither our fans nor ourselves by it. Let this music just make people happy; help them expand the borders of their own mind. We have many fans and are willing to expand our audience by “Taboo”. We are happy to get closer to people, to become more comprehensible, which, I believe, is very important these tense days. People are inclined to create their own taboos, but those are real winners, who are capable of changing their selves by expanding the frames of their “don’ts”.
